Students in Design Technology now study Design Technology in long rotations in two different areas of the subject.

The first rotation runs from Sept to Feb, the second rotation Feb to July.

One rotation covers Food Technology, the other covers Resistant Materials, CAD CAM and Product Design.

Some students will study Food Technology first then rotate to Resistant Materials, whilst others start with Resistant Materials then move to Food Technology.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY ROTATION.

What will students study this rotation?

Year 7 and 8 students

Students will study an introductory course into Food, nutrition, and practical cooking. They will develop a range of healthy and nutritional meals for themselves and others. They will develop a range of savoury and sweet dishes and study the theoretical technology behind each dish. They will develop their practical making skills and understand the functions of ingredients.

Year 9 students

In addition to introducing the students to Food technology and practical food preparation, the students will focus on the use of rising agents in their practical work. They will develop a range of dishes, both savory and sweet, for themselves and others and study the theoretical technology behind each dish. They will develop their practical making skills and understand the functions of ingredients.

What assessment will students do this rotation?

Students will be assessed on three key food practical dishes and the related theory that supports the practical. The assessments will focus on food preparation, cooking, presentation, hygiene skills as well as supporting understanding.

What homework will be set this rotation?

Students will be set further research tasks to support their design and making work. This is set fortnightly.

What can we do at home to help with this rotations work?

With the help and assistance of parents/carers encourage your child to practice their cooking skills at home. In addition, they can help with shopping and planning meals.

What extension project can students complete at home during this rotation?

Students have stretch and challenge tasks available in their class booklets.

RESISTANT MATERIALS ROTATION.

What will students study this rotation?

Year 7 students

Students will work towards three projects.

Project 1: Students will be introduced to the workshop, health and safety, tools, materials, and equipment by manufacturing a hinged wooden stored box. The box will be decorated using CADCAM laser cutting. As well as developing their practical skills, students will study the theory behind manufacturing, understanding materials properties. Students will also have an introduction to using CAD.

Project 2: Students will design and manufacture an electronics torch and its packaging. They will further enhance their CADCAM skills, study electronics and be introduced to polymers and polymer forming.

Project 3: Students will undertake a design and make project that uses reforming as a key skill technique. Using non-ferrous metal they will create a product and develop metal manufacturing and finishing techniques.

Year 8 students

Students will work towards three projects.

Project 1: Students will be introduced to the workshop, health and safety, tools, materials, and equipment by manufacturing a hinged wooden stored box. The box will be decorated using CADCAM laser cutting. As well as developing their practical skills, students will study the theory behind manufacturing, understanding materials properties. Students will also have an introduction to using CAD.

Project 2: Students will design a product (clock) to a specific brief and specification. They will develop designs, develop, and create a final solution presenting their ideas using a range of techniques (including CAD). The students will manufacture their product using the most appropriate techniques; ranging from fabrication, CADCAM and machining.

Project 3: students will design and create an acoustic smart phone speaker. Students will test a range of acoustic shapes for their effectiveness, then develop design and manufacture a speaker for their or others phones.

Year 9 students

Students will work towards two projects.

Project 1: Students will be introduced to the workshop, health and safety, tools, materials, and equipment by manufacturing a hinged wooden stored box. The box will be decorated using CADCAM laser cutting. As well as developing their practical skills, students will study the theory behind manufacturing, understanding materials properties. Students will also have an introduction to using CAD.

Project 2: Students can choose an open ended project brief and will design a product. They will develop designs, develop, and create a final solution presenting their ideas using a range of techniques (including CAD). The students will manufacture their product using the most appropriate techniques; ranging from fabrication, CADCAM and machining.

What assessment will students do this rotation?

Students will receive a number of assessments throughout the rotation; in general their work will be assessed at the design stage and the end of each project. Detailed criteria will be available to students so they understand what is expected at each stage.

What homework will be set this rotation?

Students will be set further research tasks to support their design and making work. This is set fortnightly.

What can we do at home to help with this rotations work?

Students should start to look at the design of products. It would also be benefit-cal for students to look at design and manufacturing TV programmes: How it works etc

What extension project can students complete at home during this rotation?

Students will be introduced to the CAD software “SketchUp”. This is a free to download programme; numerous tutorials are available for students to familiarise themselves with the software.
